Our third-grade social studies class just wrapped up an exciting project, the Flat Stanley Adventure! To start, they read Flat Stanley by Jeff Brown aloud as a class. It’s a short chapter book filled with fun and unexpected adventures.
After reading the story, students created their own unique Flat Stanleys and mailed them to friends or family members across the country—and even around the world (Canada, the United Kingdom, and Mexico). The goal was the same: to learn about geography, cultures, and the world beyond our classroom. Families were asked to send back letters, photos, and even small surprises to show what life is like where their Flat Stanley visited.
🎒Here are just a few of the awesome things they received:
🍋 Lemons for lemonade from California
🍟 Ketchup chips from Canada
💰Canadian money
🗺️ Adventure brochures
🐚 Seashells from the coast
🍬 Fresh saltwater taffy
🗺️ Several maps and fun facts about different places
Even students without a far away address still participated and had the chance to learn from their classmates’ Stanleys. This project brought social studies to life in such a fun way!
Way to go, third-grade explorers!
